39 west

Located in South Los Angeles, 39 West Special Needs Housing reflects the vision of the non-profit developer, A Community of Friends. Through affordable housing and in-house counseling, A Community of Friends fosters the independent living of mentally disabled adults.

The design consists of a series of gathering spaces that promote a sense of community amongst the tenants. The historic façade of an existing building on the site was restored as the main entry to the complex. Three levels of studio apartments stack around an open courtyard. A separate building houses a community room and computer learning center for resident meetings and job training.
